Flight to Freedom

Susan MacKay was travelling to Australia, and to a new teacher’s post in Brisbane.
Her stomach churned; was her flight delayed?
Oh no! She had planned to be airborne when the kitchen exploded into flames and the fire brigade found her husband’s charred remains. Forensics would conclude he died of an overdose and of gas inhalation. Suicide. An insurance payout.
His gambling debts and affairs drove her to a mental breakdown.
“Would Mrs MacKay please report to the information desk?”
She froze. Had he escaped? Did the burning candle not ignite the gas?
“Last call for Mrs MacKay at gate 10C.”

  4. Dear James,

A part of me is saying, “Board that plane!” On the other hand is someone calling to apprise her of her husband’s suicide? You leave us in a quandary. Well done.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

  5. Oooooo intriguing! Running or escaping? Did he deserve such a death?

  6. A good story with a great hook at the end, James. She’ll have a paper trail. If they don’t catch her before the flight they’ll get her when she lands. She needs to act innocent. It’s harder to commit the perfect crime these days. Take the call, Susan. —- Suzanne

  13. I wonder if they just lull her into security… just as she board there will be a heavy hand on her shoulder.

  15. She’s an evil woman, she’ll run to gate 10C. But I doubt that she’ll get away with it. Her dilemma is very clear.
