Is she coming?

Is she coming?

Wait by the plugs, she had said.
Where is she? My stomach tightened, and I strode around the display.
I looked at the tickets; the train leaves in ten minutes.
Her father; did she tell him?
We booked Gretna Green for tomorrow morning.
I saw her and picked up my bag.
‘Come on Aileen, let’s go.’ I took her arm. ‘Where’s your suitcase?’
‘John!’ She stood and squeezed my hand. ‘I can’t.’
Regret rippled down my spine.
‘There is no baby, and my –’ Her eyes were tearful.
A splinter of shame split my heart in two.

Why run away to Gretna Green?

  2. Oh heartbreaking
And by have so many questions. Did she know? Is there someone else, is she in fear for her life? Does she love him… Oh there is so much in only a few words. Well told

  4. At least she came to her senses and told the truth before they made it to Gretna Green! Good story James.

  10. Dear James,

It sounds like she tried to rope him into marriage. The question in my mind is did she lie about the baby or did she lose it? Either way, a good, but sad, story.

  13. That’s sad but at least she was finally honest before he made a big mistake.
    A good, well-written story, James. —- Suzanne

  14. May be this is the right decision. Going against her family she would be unhappy for rest of her life.

  15. Not fair to him, leaving him in the lurch on the way to Gretna Green, which sounds like a nice place. Maybe he can relax there and sort out what happened. Maybe she should still go…

  17. You’ve written this so well. I just feel so sorry for him. He wanted to do the right thing by her. Did she make up the baby or was there a miscarriage? Or is her father so manipulative that he’s swayed or intimidated her? Well done, James!

  18. The details you’ve included (e.g. his stomach tightening and her squeezing his hand) bring this story to life. “There’s no baby” sure makes me wonder what else she has to tell him…

  19. There could be so many reasons for her to not go through with it, but his shame indicates to me that he fell for deception.

  20. Awww …. I could feel his anxiety and later his pain. A sad tale with many unanswered questions at the end. GOSH … a baby for two, too young, kids could be a burden. It could be a blessing but one they can’t see right now. I loved this tale, James. I would want to know more.
